Flexible Pavement Research - Wednesday 8:30 a.m.
★ Brian Prowell- Advanced Materials Services, LLC Auburn, Ala.
ME Design Guide
Asphalt pavement design relied on methods developed during the AASHO Test Road for
over 50 years. This empirical technique served well until traffic volumes and loads increased to levels substantially higher than what was used to develop the design method. Recent completion of the mechanistic-empirical pavement design promises to replace the aged AASHO method with a design that uses properties of actual pavement materials to close gaps in the old technology.
★ Michael Harnsberger- Western Research Institute Laramie, Wyo.
Asphalt Research - Doing Business with Western Research Institute
The presentation will cover the highlights of WRI-FHWA research into the relationships between asphalt chemical properties and field performance. The impact of asphalt aging, especially at the surface of pavements, has important implications to the rheology and thus the cracking performance of pavements.
WRI is using chemical and rheological tools to investigate pavement aging in very thin layers. Other aspects of WRI research will also be briefly discussed.
★ Alan Carter - Ecole de technologie superieure Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Laboratory Research on Full Depth Reclamation Mateials
The presentation will show the work done on FDR cure, on FDR mix design and in the comparison between FDR and CIR characteristics.
★ Scott Shuler - Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colo.
Bullet-proof Chip Seals: Newest Developments in Making Chip Seals Cost Effective and Lower Risk
This presentation presents the results of National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 14-17, a user's manual that takes the 'art' out of chip seal technology and quantifies several previously qualitative aspects of this highly cost effective maintenance tool so that practitioners have more than a fighting chance to build successful chip seals without the risk of windshield and other vehicular damage or flushed pavement surfaces.
